Sourcing the “IT” Fendi sweater from their Spring/Summer 2017 campaign proved to be a task not for the faint hearted! I think locating the piece was such an arduous task purely because of the amount of publicity the design has received. There are countless photos of celebs in this sweater - from a Vogue Cooking segment with Gigi Hadid, to an editorial featuring PLL star Lucy Hale. It is undoubtedly a hot item! Unfortunately for me though, with lots of hype comes increased demand. Fendi RTW is quite limited and hard to come by as it is, so the task of sourcing this style in the correct size was challenging.
What’s the big deal about this sweater you ask? Well, the love for this piece started when I first viewed Fendi’s Spring/Summer runway show last year. I can’t quite explain it, there are some pieces that you see in a collection that you know without a doubt are must haves! This was one of them. I instantly loved the sporty yet sexy feel of the silhouette and knew it was so me.
This amazing sweater comes in four different colour variations – red, pink, white and a mint green. Personally I fell head over heels for both the pink and the white variations, however our newly opened Australian boutiques did not receive the runway version. Instead they offer a commercialized recap piece that is very similar. It is a full-length pullover, which has little cutouts on the wrists to make up for the absence of the cutout on the main body of the garment. Without it though, the sweater lacks any sexiness and is a poor substitute for the original. The cutout showcasing under boob is what makes the look! Thus with a heavy heart and no idea how I would source the exact piece I was after, I passed up the recap version.
Many fruitless hours of online searching aside, in the end I was quite fortunate that Net-a-Porter came to the rescue during my Fendi sweater emergency! A lovely shopping assistant I met at a Net-a-Porter function last year remembered that I loved this particular design. She thoughtfully emailed me just before the white variation was released onto the site and was able to help me secure it in a size 38. It fits perfectly and I am so in love! I was also very impressed that I was given both a Fendi box and dust bag along with the iconic Net-a-Porter packaging. It seems like a minor detail, however I really appreciate having the Fendi experience, despite not being able to purchase it at my local boutique.
I also want to mention that I decided to go with the white variation as the pink is far too bright to be wearable for me. It’s funny, as I initially fell in love with the beautiful, bubble gum pink sweater I’d seen in editorials and runway photos. Unfortunately, in these pictures though, the vibrancy must have been dulled, as in real life the colour is almost fluorescent and is something that I would find difficult to wear. Keep this in mind if you too are thinking of buying the pink version and are unable to inspect it in person first.
On a related note, it frustrates me when the buying teams of high-end luxury brands choose not to include key looks from their runways. This piece has been featured on numerous front covers, in editorials of every notable fashion magazine and has also been worn by many high profile bloggers and celebrities! Given the runway sweater is a key collection piece; at least a couple should be made available in every Fendi boutique worldwide. I’m sure I’m not the only one in Australia who wanted to rock the sweater as it was shown on the runway!
I hope you enjoy all of the pictures I found whilst obsessing over this piece. If you were to buy this sweater which version would you choose? Do you have a favorite image?
