The Fendi “IT” Cutout Sweater of Spring/Summer 2017

Sourcing the “IT” Fendi sweater from their Spring/Summer 2017 campaign proved to be a task not for the faint hearted! I think locating the piece was such an arduous task purely because of the amount of publicity the design has received. There are countless photos of celebs in this sweater - from a Vogue Cooking segment with Gigi Hadid, to an editorial featuring PLL star Lucy Hale. It is undoubtedly a hot item! Unfortunately for me though, with lots of hype comes increased demand. Fendi RTW is quite limited and hard to come by as it is, so the task of sourcing this style in the correct size was challenging.

What’s the big deal about this sweater you ask? Well, the love for this piece started when I first viewed Fendi’s Spring/Summer runway show last year. I can’t quite explain it, there are some pieces that you see in a collection that you know without a doubt are must haves! This was one of them. I instantly loved the sporty yet sexy feel of the silhouette and knew it was so me.

This amazing sweater comes in four different colour variations – red, pink, white and a mint green. Personally I fell head over heels for both the pink and the white variations, however our newly opened Australian boutiques did not receive the runway version. Instead they offer a commercialized recap piece that is very similar. It is a full-length pullover, which has little cutouts on the wrists to make up for the absence of the cutout on the main body of the garment. Without it though, the sweater lacks any sexiness and is a poor substitute for the original. The cutout showcasing under boob is what makes the look! Thus with a heavy heart and no idea how I would source the exact piece I was after, I passed up the recap version.

Many fruitless hours of online searching aside, in the end I was quite fortunate that Net-a-Porter came to the rescue during my Fendi sweater emergency! A lovely shopping assistant I met at a Net-a-Porter function last year remembered that I loved this particular design. She thoughtfully emailed me just before the white variation was released onto the site and was able to help me secure it in a size 38. It fits perfectly and I am so in love! I was also very impressed that I was given both a Fendi box and dust bag along with the iconic Net-a-Porter packaging. It seems like a minor detail, however I really appreciate having the Fendi experience, despite not being able to purchase it at my local boutique.

I also want to mention that I decided to go with the white variation as the pink is far too bright to be wearable for me. It’s funny, as I initially fell in love with the beautiful, bubble gum pink sweater I’d seen in editorials and runway photos. Unfortunately, in these pictures though, the vibrancy must have been dulled, as in real life the colour is almost fluorescent and is something that I would find difficult to wear. Keep this in mind if you too are thinking of buying the pink version and are unable to inspect it in person first.

On a related note, it frustrates me when the buying teams of high-end luxury brands choose not to include key looks from their runways. This piece has been featured on numerous front covers, in editorials of every notable fashion magazine and has also been worn by many high profile bloggers and celebrities! Given the runway sweater is a key collection piece; at least a couple should be made available in every Fendi boutique worldwide. I’m sure I’m not the only one in Australia who wanted to rock the sweater as it was shown on the runway!

I hope you enjoy all of the pictures I found whilst obsessing over this piece. If you were to buy this sweater which version would you choose? Do you have a favorite image?

The white is probably the most wearable out of all the colours I think. So glad you like it xx

We have a similar taste in fashion. I have had my eye on this jumper for a while now. You can’t beat good quality knitwear. I’m thinking about buying it in both white & pink. Is it as soft as it looks? I can’t wait to see how you style it! 💕

    • May 9, 2017 / 16:59

      Hey gorgeous,

The knit piece is quite thick and definitely well made, but it is composed of artificial fibers. This means that is isn’t soft like a cashmere or woolen piece. Wishing you the best with purchasing it. It’s such a beautiful and wearable sweater

That sweater is so gorgeous! My favourite colour is red, so the red one is my favourite. I am in love with these sweaters, and want one so bad!

Such a cuuute sweater! I think I would go for the white one if I was to purchase the sweater. For some reason, I feel that the white version showcases the cutout more so than the other colors. Probably because with the bubble gum pink I’d just stare at the sweater being pink, not the cutout!

The pink version of this sweater sure is the attention grabber! It would be virtually impossible to miss it in a crowd!

I agree with you Irene that the white is the going to be the best and easiest of the three to wear and showcases the details the most.

I’m totally feeling you babe, there are some pieces that you just see and say “this is for me, I gotta have it” right? This sweater is amazing, The pink one is fabulous as well but I would pick the white one too as nothing is more classic than black and white for me. Can’t wait to see how you will wear it! I am sure you will come up with many and amazing outfits with this gem of a sweater!
    Much love,

There definitely are some pieces that just don’t take no for an answer and end up leaving the store with you! Out of the three colour options the white and black seems to be the most wearable for sure. The black and white is such a classic like you say.

The photo shoot for this sweater will be coming up in the near future. I already have a great idea for the location so it’s just a matter of getting there, weather permitting.

Thanks for all your beautiful support Stella 🙂

      Have a great week!

I honestly have never even seen this sweater before this post (or if I have, I can’t remember), I must be living under a rock haha I didn’t really get it from the first picture but after scrolling through all the photos, I can now see what the hype is about! It looks like it would go with so many outfits too. I would probably get the white too since it’s most practical but I love the pink one too. A little too candy pink for my taste but it looks really nice in the photos you shared!

It’s a really fun looking piece that keeps wearing sweaters sexy too! The pink is quite bright so you’ll always be standing out in a crowd for sure! It’s a beautiful colour too but just a bit much for me to choose over the white, like yourself.

      Thanks Shannon 🙂
