For quite a long time, I wouldn't even know where to begin when answering the question “what is your style?”. It was one that would have me scrambling around in my head, doing brain acrobatics, to come up with an answer that sounded even semi coherent and intelligent. After a lot of thought though, especially now that I am more involved in fashion than ever, I have come to the conclusion that this question was always so hard to answer because I simply operate differently to quite a lot of people.
My style is not something that can be put in a box. I am not a monochrome girl, a layering addict, an elegant dresser, colour enthusiast, master of grunge or preppy princess. In fact I can be each of these things and much, much more. I can be anything I want, because I am a fashion chameleon * who knows no bounds!
The way I dress depends on the way I am feeling, where I am going and what my latest obsessions are. I can be inspired by a persona or character, the girl next door, my cat, a film, a fashion runway or Anna Dello Russo’s street style. It is random and illogical but that’s me!
The fashion pieces I am drawn to 90% of the time allow me to tell a story with what I am wearing. Usually I go with one really outstanding statement piece rich in detail, whether it is an amazing pair of shoes, a Chanel minaudière or an interesting sweater. This statement piece transforms into the leading lady of the day’s outfit, while all of the other details are the supporting cast members who go about their role without dominating the look. Just like how no two stories are exactly the same, the way I dress can also change both dramatically or subtly on a daily basis.
There is one thing however that will always remain consistent with my “style”. I will always select clothes that flatter my body shape and I will additionally tailor any items to ensure a great fit. There is almost nothing worse in the fashion world than ill-fitting clothes. This alone will instantly ruin even the most expensive of cuts!
Today’s fashion look is inspired by Enid Blyton’s “The Naughtiest Girl in the School” series. It is about a spoiled girl named Elizabeth Allen, who is sent to an elite boarding school and tries her best to be expelled by pulling mischievous stunts. While I was nothing like Elizabeth in school myself, it was sure fun to take on her persona wearing a cheeky, short tennis skirt with a sporty Gucci varsity sweater. The location definitely helped me to get into her persona too.
*Btw for those wondering, “ fashion chameleon ” is a term that was stolen from my friend Olivia, who is definitely one herself.
